The Maple guide to Canada's casino hotels
One question decides every review on this desk: would the place make a good night away? So the room is judged before the casino, then the food, the spa and pool, the stage and how hard it is to get there. Numbers are lifted from each property's own pages or from a publisher we name, and every write-up carries the date its facts were last checked.

Hilton Lac-Leamy 4.36A
Our editor's choice is not the top scorer. Fallsview wins on raw totals, but the Hilton across the river from Ottawa is the stay we would book for ourselves: five CITQ stars since 2001, pools and hot tubs heated inside and out in every season, a 17-room Amerispa, and Parliament Hill roughly ten minutes away by car. Play is the side dish here, which is exactly the point.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa
C$350 million turned the Rideau Carleton grounds into what the brand describes as its first fully integrated property on Canadian soil. Inside: 1,500-plus machines that never stop, a 2,200-capacity LIVE venue, Council Oak for steak, and no admission under 19 anywhere.
Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto
Toronto's Woodbine casino reborn beside the track: a 5,000-capacity theatre, sauna and steam alongside the pool, a garage you do not pay for and an airport bus that costs nothing.
Pickering Casino Resort Hotel
Great Canadian spent C$500 million on this complex east of Toronto. Keys measure between 388 and 775 sq. ft. and 22 are accessible; the arena-theatre seats 2,500; on day one the floor held 2,200 machines and upward of 90 live tables.
Great Blue Heron Casino & Hotel
A First Nations property (Mississaugas of Scugog Island) whose hotel was announced complete on 1 November 2021. Sizes conflict: 100 keys says Wikipedia, 116 say travel listings, and the operator stays silent. The Nest, its event room, fits 800.

How the Maple score works
Six headings, each marked out of 5 and then weighted: room comfort carries 30 per cent, food and drink 20, wellness and gaming 15 each, entertainment and location 10 each. The weighted result is the Maple score, and the letter grade simply translates it (A+ starts at 4.50). Hotels never see a score before we publish it. Read the full method.
Readers' questions
Which Canadian casino resort scores highest on Maple?
Fallsview, in Niagara Falls, at 4.60 out of 5. It wins on sheer range: 372 keys designed around the view, more than 3,200 machines and 110 live tables, a stage for 5,000 and about twenty places to eat.
Which casino hotel opened most recently in Canada?
Ottawa's Hard Rock, with 150 keys, on 3 July 2025. The previous opening was Great Canadian's Woodbine hotel, which opened its doors to guests on 1 August 2023.
At what age can I go into a casino here?
Provinces decide: 18 in AB, MB and QC; 19 in ON, BC, NB and most others.
Do casino hotels let children stay?
Most do, because the age line is drawn around gaming and some bars and venues, not the hotel. The one exception in our guide is Hard Rock Ottawa, which is 19+ everywhere, rooms included.
